Its funny when a known wrestler like Sonnen faces a known striker like Silva. The guy who is known as the striker is more wary of takedowns and the wrestler knows this.

I dont know how many times Ive seen a better striker get hit and hurt by a wrestler cause he’s too preoccupied looking to defend the shot.

After getting rocked the striker starts looking to defend strikes which leaves him open or the takedown. Perhaps this was the case for Silva v Sonnen.

Silva weathered all that Sonnen had and squeezed out triangle choke in the 5th and final round to defend his UFC middleweight belt. Here I was in my previous post, bagging Silva for not fighting. Sonnen gave him all the fight he could handle and Silva still shone through and perhaps showed that Hall of Fame quality that I was talking about yesterday.

Good job by both Sonnen and Silva!

It looked to me that Matt Hughes was a bit on the defensive with Almeida starting off the first round with slightly more aggressive striking, until Hughes rocked him with a left hoo and ran into put Almeida to sleep with a vice like front head lock! Very nice.

Fitch looked his usual wrestling self while Alves loked a little rained from his weight cut. I gave Alves a slight edge on the feet but Fitch was able to land enought akedowns and , for the majority of the time, keeop the fight where he wanted it, and ripping out the decision win.

Jon Fitch talks Rematch with Thiago Alves for UFC 117

Jon Fitch comments on his previous fight with Thiago Alves and how much both he and Alves have evolved since their first fight four years ago.

He breaks down their first fight and how Alves put him on his ass after he threw a lazy
leg kick and how reversed the position and gave Alves his neck for a guillotine, knowing that he is confident in defending that choke, which he did, and thus gaining him the dominant position. This allowed him to grind Alves down a bit before the eventual knock out in the second round.

The kick that marked the start of the end for Alves, I believe, was one of those freaky knockouts that Fitch was lucky to land. I use the term luck loosely though, they say that if you intend to land a technique and it lands then there is no suck thing as luck.

Although in this case I think it was more of a case of Alves getting excited and being careless. I don’t think he will make the same mistake again.

He also talks about the possibility of having to fight Josh Koscheck, who is a training partner and fellow member of his training camp, should he win his fight with Alves and if Koscheck wins his rematch with GSP.

I think a fight between Koscheck and Fitch would be pretty cool to see.

In this interview Thiago Alves comments on his upcoming fight and how he plans to make a statement to the fans and the UFC by being the first guy to knockout Fitch.

I think he has come along way since the first fight and definitely has the power to knock Fitch out and has vastly improved his Jiu Jitsu off his back as we saw in his fight With St Pierre. If he stands the way he did when striking with GSP I think we are gonna see a very similar result as what happened in the GSP fight, because Fitch is an outstanding wrestler.

Alves’ Jiu Jitsu has greatly improved as we saw with his fight against GSP but I still think Fitch will win this one with his takedowns just like GSP did. Fitch might not be able to knock Alves out as he did in the first fight but I think he might still be able to at least grind him down to a decision.

Although Fitch is not the same fighter he was four years ago either…
