UFC 130 – Edgar vs. Maynard 3 is to be held on May 28, 2011 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States.

This event is to be the third meeting between Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard and their second fight for the UFC Lightweight Championship.

The two met earlier this year at UFC 125: Resolution with the fight ending in a split draw, and Edgar retaining his title. Their first encounter at UFC Fight Night: Florian vs. Lauzon saw Maynard win via unanimous decision.

On February 9, it was rumored that Thiago Silva had been forced from his bout with Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and could be replaced by Rashad Evans. Silva stated that he was not injured and was looking forward to his bout with Jackson. Instead, information surfaced that Silva may have failed a pre-fight drug screening at UFC 125, which could result in his suspension. It was then announced that the proposed Rashad Evans bout was never close to being signed, and that Rampage would face Matt Hamill.

Former Sengoku Middleweight Champion Jorge Santiago has confirmed he has signed a contract with the UFC and will return to face Brian Stann at this event. Stann was originally scheduled to face Wanderlei Silva, but Silva was reluctant to face Stann and was replaced on the card.

On April 20th, Brad Pickett was forced to withdraw from his bout with Miguel Torres. Demetrious Johnson, who was set to fight Renan Barao on the undercard, has stepped in as Pickett’s replacement while Barao will face Cole Escovedo.

On April 27th, Norifumi Yamamoto was forced out of his bout with Chris Cariaso due to injury. Michael McDonald, who was scheduled to take on Nick Pace at UFC 133, has stepped in as Yamamoto’s replacement.

Cody McKenzie was set to fight Bart Palaszewski in this event, but an injury forced him out of the card. UFC president Dana White later announced that Gleison Tibau would step up for McKenzie.

UFC 130 will feature two preliminary fights live on Spike TV.

UFC Primetime – Georges St-Pierre vs. Jake Shields

This is the first episode of UFC Primetime’s countdown to UFC 129 Georges St-Pierre vs Jake Shields. The St-Pierre vs Shields fight is one that I, and many others in the MMA community, including both GSP and Shields, have been waiting for for a long time. Shields is the Rumble on the Rock Welterweight Tournament Champion, the first and last EliteXC Welterweight Champion, the former Shooto World Middleweight Champion, and former Strikeforce Middleweight Champion. He has trained extensively with Cesar Gracie, David Terrell, Nick Diaz, Nate Diaz and coaches a team of MMA fighters including top ranked Lightweight Gilbert Melendez. So the question remains, is he a threat to GSP?

In this clip Georges comments on being a great athlete but the quality that has enabled him to be such a dominant champion is his mindset. He also refers to his ability and desire to be able to beat his opponents at their own game. I think the best game plan for GSP to beat Shields would be to employ a similar strategy to that which he used against Josh Koscheck in their second fight, and that is to jab and move and pick Shields apart on the feet. I definitely give the edge in stand up to GSP and think that he has a few more tools at his disposal than Shields.

Although Shields is definitely a threat and one of St-Pierre’s toughest challengers, if he comes in with his game face on, as he so often does, keeps it on the feet with smart attacks and movement, and doesn’t give Shields any chance to take him down, GSP will win…again.

UFC 129 – St-Pierre vs. Shields is to be held on Saturday, April 30, 2011 at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario. This event is to be the sixth that the UFC has hosted in Canada and the first in Ontario since mixed martial arts was legalized in the province in August 2010. Originally promoted as 131 it was later changed to UFC 129 as its early 2011 schedule started to fall more firmly into place.

It is expected to be the largest UFC event in history and will coincide with a two-day UFC Fan Expo at the Direct Energy Centre. UFC officials had originally planned for the Rogers Centre to be configured to hold 42,000 fans for UFC 129. The UFC put those tickets on sale to UFC Fight Club members in a special pre-sale on February 10, 2011, whereby selling almost all of them. They released and sold more tickets the following day to UFC newsletter subscribers in a second special pre-sale. UFC 129 then sold out when tickets went on sale to the general public on February 12, with officials scrambling to up the number of seats to 55,000. Selling out all 55,000 tickets for gate revenues exceeding $11 million, the event shatters both MMA attendance and gate records in North America.

John Makdessi was rumored to face Jonathan Brookins at the event; however, it is now being reported that Makdessi will will fight Kyle Watson.

In a conference call for UFC: Fight For The Troops 2 in January 2011, Dana White confirmed that UFC Featherweight Champion José Aldo would defend his title against Mark Hominick on this card, provided that Hominick defeated George Roop. White also stated that, regardless of the outcome of the Hominick/Roop fight, Aldo would still defend his Featherweight Championship at this event. Hominick defeated Roop, via first round TKO, to confirm his place as no. 1 contender, and solidify the bout with Aldo.

Rory MacDonald was expected to face James Wilks at this event, but Wilks was forced from the card, and replaced by Nate Diaz.

On February 11th, it was announced that Matt Hamill will no longer fight Phil Davis at this event and will instead fight Quinton Jackson at UFC 130. In a Twitter post, Davis said he was “sorry the fight had been removed from the website, and would be fighting in Toronto regardless.” Davis was expected to face Jason Brilz until Tito Ortiz had to pull out of his UFC Fight Night 24 fight with Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. Davis is now expected to headline that event against Nogueira while Brilz is expected to face Vladimir Matyushenko.

On February 27, 2011, it was revealed that two of the preliminary bouts would air on a Spike TV card.

UFC Primetime will return to build up the GSP/Jake Shields title fight.
