Jose Aldo retains his UFC Featherweight Title with a first round knockout of Chad Mendes at UFC 142 today. Aldo demonstrated his trademark ‘soccer’ leg kicks against Mendes who did his best to stay away from them and try and time his takedowns, some of which were pretty deep. Aldo’s impeccable takedown defense was too good for Mendes who, even when succeeding in taking Jose down one time, was able to spring back to his feet immediately.

Mendes got around behind Aldo and pinned him against the cage towards the end of the round and was trying to wear Aldo’s legs out by throwing some knees into his thighs but Aldo spun out of it and, as the two of them separated, threw a nasty knee that knocked Mendes flat on his back and followed up with three punches before the ref jumped in and stopped the fight at 4:59 of the first round.

Vitor Belfort also showed why he was still one of Brazil’s favorite fighters with a first round submission win over Anthony Johnson. Johnson came out very aggressively and scored a couple of takedowns during the round and hit Belfort with some punches on the ground that caused some swelling over his right eye. Joe Mergliotta seemd to be standing them up rather quickly I thought, not allowing Johnson to work very much. Belfort kept his composure throughout and during a scramble to get to their feet, managed to get Johnson’s back.

He softened Johnson up with some punches who was defending the rear naked choke, but Vitor persisted and snuck his right forearm under Johnson’s chin and finished him with a gable grip rear choke. Im sure the UFC fans in Rio will be celebrating Belfort’s and Aldo’s victories tonight.

Overeem Punishes Lesnar’s Body And Wins UFC Debut

.
Alistair Overeem was victorious today at UFC 141 in his debut against a confident Brock Lesnar. I guess the main questions in this fight was the classic striker vs wrestler story; can Lesnar avoid Overeem’s standup and take him down and pound him out and can Overeem avoid the takedown and land his strikes.

Well, at the beginning of the first round Brock stayed mobile using his jabs and right hands to set up his takedowns while Overeem initially looked to be wary of both punches and takedowns. Overeem’s confidence seemed to grow when he stuffed one of Lesnar’s takedowns and after that he seemed not to phased about Lesnar’s standup either and started stalking Lesnar, backing him against the cage and driving some nasty knees into Brock’s midsection, which clearly hurt him.

It was a cracking left shin kick to Brock’s liver which sent him down on his butt leaving him with his back against the cage whilst Overeem stood over him and threw punches which mostly hit the covering arms of Lesnar, but it was till clear that Lesnar could not answer back and so the ref stepped in and stopped it.

Jon Jones retains his UFC Light Heavyweight belt at UFC 140 with a 2nd round submission win against Lyoto Machida and really establishes himself as a legitimate champion. The first round went exactly how Machida fans were hoping, with Machida moving side to side, in and out and rocking Jones with a left half way through the round.

A tentative looking Jones walked back to his corner and at the start of the second round it was good to see Jones realize he had being fighting Machida’s fight up until that point and that he was going to have to do something different he was going to retain his belt. Jones stunned Machida with a right hand, got Machida to the ground and landed a nasty elbow to Machida’s forehead which opened up a decent cut.

The doctor checked it out and gave the thumbs up and shortly after the fight continued, Jones landed another big right hand that dropped Machida and during the scramble to get to his feet, Machida wound up in a front standing guillotine choke. With his back against the cage Machida had nowhere to go and within a few seconds went to sleep before Big John stepped in and Jones let the unconscious Machida crumple to the floor.
