I bought the the May-June edition of UFC Australia a week or so back while I was standing in line at the supermarket.

I mainly grabbed it for the big ass poster of St-Pierre vs Shields (for 7 bucks!) but after reading through it found a Phil Davis MMA workout and thought I’d post it.

Davis uses a strength and conditioning program developed by San Diego-based trainer Doug Balzarini, who also coaches bantamweight champ Dominick Cruz.

This is an outdoor circuit he designed to help Davis create smoother movement patterns and improve his stamina and endurance.

THE WORKOUT

Warm Up
Dynamic series of jumping jacks, cariocas, high knees, lunges and other bodyweight moves designed to raise core temperature and increase blood flow to the joints and extremities

Core Training

Superband Resisted Rotation 2*20 per side
TRX Tuck/Pike/Pendulum Swing 15/15/20

Circuit Workout
The athlete works at each station for approximately 60 seconds before moving to the next station. This equates to three to five-minute rounds with one minute of rest between.

Grapplers 20 seconds

The second day of strength training each week is in the weight room and focuses more on building foundational strength. Balzarini breaks these sessions into four types of movements: pushing, pulling, rotational and lower body. Here is an example of some of the staple exercises Davis does on those days.

Pushing Moves
Floor presses, push-up variations, dumbbell chest presses

Pulling moves
Pull-ups, bent-over rows, one-arm rows, vertical rope pulls, horizontal rope pulls

Rotational Moves
Tubing rotations, medicine ball throws, woodchop variations

Lower Body Moves
Deadlifts, front squats, barbell cleans, kettlebell swings, lunges

Before becoming known as having some of the best wrestling skills without having any previous wrestling credentials before starting his mma career, GSP was mainly known for his explosive, technical and versatile striking.

So as tribute to his upcoming fight with Josh Koscheck at UFC 124, Ive decided to share the first of four of GSP workout videos recently uploaded to youtube, where GSP demonstrates some of his stand up striking techniques.

In this video from Dana White’s video blog of the lead up to this weekend’s UFc 120, Dana catches up with GSP who explains his recent tutelage from Joe Rogan to help improve his spinning back kick.

Rogan, mainly known for being a comedian, and although many know of his jiu jitsu training, he was a former Tae Kwon Do chamipion. At around 3:46 on the video, Dana watches some footage on his phone of Joe executing a spinning back kick, with very nice form.

I’ve always appreciated Joe Rogan’s commentating because of some of the finer points of the game that he illustrates while watching a fight that soemone who is a mere spectator would not know.
You can watch a thousand fights but there are some things that you can only learn by training yourself.

I read a comment that said that Tae Kwon Do kicks were only good for kicking people off horses.
During my time training in Tae Kwon Do, I found that Tae Kwon Do possessed some of the most technical and extensive kicking skills and probably the flashiest too. They may not generate the power of muay thai kicks, but GSP explains that the Tae Kwon Do spinning back kick is the most
powerful spinning back kick form all the styles. Bruce Lee also borrowed many of Tae Kwon Do’s kicking techniques to incorporate into his style of Jeet Kune Do

The kicks I have learned from Tae Kwon Do have also served me very well too:)
